Generic Host Process for Win32 Services - nasty error!
A brief blog entry about an irritating problem that's emerged on Beth's laptop. It's this one:

She certainly doesn't seem to be the only one suffering from such errors -- and it looks like it's a Microsoft 'hotfix' that's gone a bit awry.
Microsoft gave this message when I clicked the link suggested by the report.. hopefully there'll be another update out soon.
So... do we 'wait and see' or start rolling back the updates? I'll keep you posted.

So, I'm reading a lot about this 'Generic Host Process for Win32' but am still at a bit of a loss as to whether it should be allowed or not (by firewall)??
Please help?

generic host process for win32 services
Hi go to this link for a wee bit of info
http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/183510/an/0/page/10
Basically it states
you will only need to give the file access to the internet when you want to check for microsoft critical updates otherwise you can block it.
and another is
I had a problem with this process after installing SP2. Prior, with ZA alert and denying access all was ok, afterward, by denying I could not access the Internet. Afterward, it took a while before the penny dropped and some advice from members, I agreed access for Generic Host Service. The problem was solved.
This was the only hiccup experienced with SP2 on board and since..

Hi, John.
Thank you very much for the tip. I'll certainly take a look at the access that the host process has to the internet. Beth doesn't have ZoneAlarm installed, but it seems likely that it's something very similar that's causing the problem.
Once again, I'm really grateful that you've taken the time to get in touch, and will be sure to let you know how we get on with sorting it out :)
All the best
james
